444: George Soros: The man who would have killed his mother

The excellent Hungarian internet news site 444.hu published a list of 99 headlines on the “evil activities” of George Soros, whom Viktor Orbán has transformed into a monster in the last ten years.

As you will see, the picture that emerges from the relentless Hungarian government propaganda is that one of George Soros’s major tasks in life is the ruination of the country of his birth. The government pursues its propagandistic agenda through the repetition of lies in the pro-government media. The government has at least three television stations that blast anti-Soros propaganda, in addition to countless local papers and internet sites.

Those who don’t live in Hungary and/or don’t know Hungarian can’t imagine the grip of the propaganda machine that has fixated on the person of George Soros. Therefore, I was pleased to see that 444.hu took the time to collect some of the headlines which have appeared in the last few years. I know that the list looks long, but, believe me, this is a tiny fraction of the whole. The headlines are primitive and increasingly ridiculous but remain effective. They tap into anti-foreign, anti-Semitic, anti-capitalistic sentiments in large swaths of the Hungarian population. And so, the anti-Soros campaign continues unabated. 

I’m hoping that non-Hungarian-speaking readers of Hungarian Spectrum, after scanning this list, will better understand the nature of the Orbán regime and its modus operandi.

As for today’s illustration, “George Soros, the Satan” appeared on TV2’s infamous news program called “Tények” (Facts). TV2 is one of the three free-to-air television stations in the country and, as such, is quite useful from the perspective of government propaganda. Until 2014 the station was owned by ProSiebenSat1 Media SE. Then Orbán persuaded Andy Vajna, the former Hollywood producer and a friend of the prime minister, to buy it. Since then, its news has been in the service of the Orbán government.
